Decode the DNA Message
DNA works like a code written with four chemical “letters.” In this activity, students use a simple DNA alphabet to decode a hidden message from Dr. K.
Children learn that the order of DNA bases matters. A small change in the sequence can change the message, which helps them understand why scientists study DNA so carefully.
Image suggestion:
A “secret message” worksheet with Jennifer holding a pencil and Daniel looking surprised as the code reveals a phrase.
Materials:
Printed DNA code chart, pencils, colored markers, worksheet.
Experiment / Activity:
Create a code where each three-letter DNA sequence stands for a letter. For example, ATG = A, TTA = B, GGC = C. Students decode the hidden sentence.
Sample hidden message:
“Evidence tells the story.”
What children learn:
DNA stores information through sequence. Like letters in a word, the order of bases matters.
