Pattern Detective: Can You Read the Clues?
Dr. Franklin did not simply look at Photo 51 and guess. She studied patterns carefully, compared evidence, and used mathematics and reasoning.
In this detective-style activity, children examine different mystery patterns and decide what each one might reveal. They practice the same kind of careful thinking Jennifer and Daniel see in Franklin’s laboratory.
Image suggestion:
A “Pattern Detective Case File” page with magnifying glass, dots, lines, and Jennifer’s notebook.
Materials:
Printed pattern cards, magnifying glass if available, pencils, observation sheet.
Experiment / Activity:
Create several simple pattern cards: spirals, X-shapes, straight lines, scattered dots, repeating grids. Children answer: What repeats? What changes? Is there symmetry? What clue might the pattern give?
What children learn:
Scientists do not only collect data. They interpret it carefully.
