Strawberry DNA Extraction

DNA is hidden inside living things, but with a safe kitchen experiment, children can actually see strands of DNA from a strawberry.

This activity connects directly to the book’s central mystery: DNA is real, physical, and present inside cells. Students gently break open strawberry cells and separate the DNA using simple household materials.

Image suggestion:
Daniel holding a clear cup while Jennifer watches white strands of strawberry DNA appear.

Materials:
Fresh or frozen strawberries, resealable plastic bag, water, dish soap, salt, coffee filter, clear cup, cold rubbing alcohol, spoon or wooden stick.

Experiment / Activity:
Children mash strawberries, mix them with a salt and soap solution, filter the liquid, then slowly add cold rubbing alcohol. White cloudy strands appear at the top.

Safety note:
Adult supervision required. Do not drink or taste any experiment materials. Rubbing alcohol must be handled by an adult.

What children learn:
DNA is not imaginary. It is a molecule found inside living cells.
