Build a Simple Circuit
Jennifer and Daniel discover that electrical systems depend on connected parts. In this activity, children use a battery-powered classroom kit to explore a simple circuit with an adult. They open and close a switch to observe when the lamp shines and when it goes dark. By drawing the circuit and recording their observations, they learn why current needs a complete path through the lamp.
Materials An age-appropriate circuit kit with an AA battery holder, the specified batteries, insulated leads, a switch, and a matching lamp module; paper and pencil.
Experiment or Activity
1. With an adult, assemble the circuit exactly as the kit instructions show. Keep the switch open while setting up.
2. Close the switch. Observe the lamp, then open the switch and observe again.
3. Repeat the comparison. Draw the circuit and mark the point where opening the switch breaks the path.
Safety note Adult supervision required. Use only the kit’s specified components. Never connect battery terminals directly together. Disconnect after testing. Do not use loose coin cells, wall outlets, or household current.
What children learn A battery supplies energy. A complete conducting path allows current to flow through the lamp; opening the path stops that current.
Think about it What changed when the switch opened?
